Best GoPro Travel Accessories: The Basics
#1. High Speed Memory Card
Purpose: This is a required GoPro accessory, and critical to how well you store your adventures.
Size and Weight: Internal and Negligible
Price: $19.99 (64 GB) and $44.99 (128 GB)
Key Attributes: Memory size should be at least 64 GB given the size requirements of 4K. You also need a high write speed so you can capture all your footage without lag time. Make sure the high speed memory card transfers at least 100 MB per second and carries a U3 certification. Don’t forget to choose a brand with a good track record to keep your memories safe.
Best Value: We use the Samsung EVO Memory Cards for our GoPro and Samsung Galaxy S8. Reliability is established from over 3,600 customers on Amazon, and is great value for money compared to other brands.
#2. GoPro Lens and Screen Protector
Purpose: Protect your GoPro touchscreen and lens.
Size and weight: Attached to GoPro and Negligible
Key Attributes: Make sure you protect the touchscreen as well as the lens. A cover during storage helps keep your pictures looking sharp during use. For the best protection, make sure the screen protectors are made of tempered glass.
Best Value: The Kupton lens and screen protector stood out to us as it has good adhesion, and included a hard lens case as well for when you aren’t conquering the world.
#3. GoPro Spare Battery
Purpose: Get extra hours of GoPro use with this accessory. We use to just get by with one battery when diving, but then we started filming more videos and needed a back-up.
Size and Weight: 0.4 x 1.4 x 1.2 inches and 0.8 ounces
Key Attributes: Make sure that the battery you select matches your GoPro version.
Best Value: We recommend the official GoPro Battery as you are guaranteed quality and compatibility.
#4. External Hard Drive
Purpose: Given all the extreme places you travel with your GoPro, it is only natural that you will break or lose your camera at some point. We back-up our photos every day to a hard drive and the cloud. Read our post Top 3 Ways to Backup Photos While Traveling for more information.
Size and Weight: 4.5 x 3 x 0.5 inches and 4.8 ounces
Key Attributes: Reliability and durability are our main concern. The three brands we trust are Seagate, Toshiba, and WD. Our next priority is size and weight. Make sure you purchase a 3.0 USB, which transfers much faster than the older version. It is also important to have a hard drive that is compatible with PC and Mac so you can use it on any computer.
Best Value: Seagate’s slim 2TB external hard drive has everything we were looking for, and at a great price. The best part is the 2Tb hard drive I just bought is thinner than my old 1 Tb hard drive!
#5. GoPro Silicone Case
Purpose: Since the GoPro Hero6 is waterproof to 10 meters without a housing, a silicone case will help keep scratches away and your GoPro looking like new.
Size and Weight: Attached to GoPro and 0.6 ounces
Key Attributes: Look for a soft case that will protect against light damage, and offer a good gripping surface. Something to keep in mind is that silicone keeps the GoPro’s heat in. This might be okay for cold climates, but not for hotter locations.
Best Value: This is a basic GoPro accessory, so price was a big factor. For this reason, we chose the Telesin silicone case. You can also consider purchasing the GoPro starter kit below that includes this and more.
#6. GoPro Accessory Case and Starter Kit
Purpose: With all the best GoPro travel accessories that exist, you need a place to properly store and protect them.
Size and Weight: 6.2 x 4.3 x 2.5 inches and 9.6 ounces with included GoPro accessories
Key Attributes: When buying a starter kit, make sure each product meets your requirements. In this case, we still recommend buying tempered glass lens protectors as the included version is only plastic.
Best Value: You can buy a travel case go GoPro accessories for less, but this Kupton starter kit gives you the basics and saves you money compared to buying each product separately.
Best GoPro Travel Accessories: Mounts
#1. Basic Waterproof Camera Strap
Purpose: GoPro accessories don’t get simpler than this. With all your action packed filming, make sure you don’t drop your GoPro and scratch the housing.
Size and Weight: Negligible
Key Attributes: Look for a high quality camera loop thread, and a mechanism to adjust the size.
Best Value: We like the Olympus adjustable strap, because it has the best ratings and covers all our key attributes. We also cut the plastic outer tubing to be able to adjust the size further.
#2. JOBY GorillaPod Tripod
Purpose: Just like a gorilla, this flexible tripod has a strong grip, and can attach to virtually any surface. Combine this with the remote control for awesome selfies!
Size and Weight: 2.2 x 2.2 x 10.1 inches and 6.7 ounces
Key Attributes: Make sure you buy the correct size and weight rating if you are planning on using the GorillaPod tripod with a pocket camera or DSLR.
Best Value: JOBY GorillaPod is the trusted brand you need. You don’t want your GoPro to drop from unknown heights.
#3. GoPro Chest Mount
Purpose: The GoPro chest mount is ideal for hands free filming from skydiving to cliff jumping. I’ve seen several people lose their GoPro with head mounts when it fell off upon impact.
Size and Weight: 7.6 x 5.5 x 1.4 inches and 6.9 ounces
Key Attributes: Fit is the most important aspect. Read the Amazon reviews if you are smaller or larger than average.
Best Value: This is a basic best GoPro travel accessory so you want to save some money by going with Sametop chest mount harness. It is also adjustable and seems to fit a wide variety of sizes as well.
#4. GoPro Backpack Shoulder Strap Mount
Purpose: The GoPro chest mount offers a secure attachment. If you are looking for a similar hands free experience without feeling restricted, then the backpack shoulder strap mount is ideal.
Size and Weight: 7 x 3 x 2 inches and 7 ounces
Key Attributes: The most important aspect to consider when buying a backpack shoulder strap mount is fit. You don’t want it sliding around on you during your hike.
Best Value: The best option on the market today is the Stuntman backpack shoulder mount, because it simply works compared to cheaper brands.
#5. GoPro Helmet Strap Mount
Purpose: Most adventure activity tours will have the sticky mount for a GoPro already installed. However, if it doesn’t, then you have to wait at least an hour for the mount to properly secure itself. Since you probably don’t have that time, the next best thing is the helmet strap mount that goes through ventilation slats.
Size and Weight: 7.2 x 1 x 6 inches and 1.4 ounces
Key Attributes: The most important thing to look for is a brand that offers a good clip to secure the strap. Keep in mind you need 4 ventilation slats for this to work.
Best Value: The official GoPro helmet strap mount received the best reviews, and is still affordable.
Best GoPro Travel Accessories: Diving and Snorkeling
#1. GoPro Waterproof Diving Case
Purpose: Since the new GoPro is waterproof to 10 meters, they no longer include a standard waterproof diving case. You will need this best GoPro accessory for travel in order to reach depths of 45 meters.
Size and Weight: 3.1 x 1.8 x 3.4 inches (can store GoPro in it to reduce travel size) and 3.7 ounces
Key Attributes: Reliability is the #1 concern as you don’t want to have your GoPro take in water and get fried.
Best Value: With a proven track record, the Kupton waterproof diving case is our top choice. You can also consider purchasing the GoPro starter kit above that includes this and more.
#2. GoPro Anti-Fog Inserts
Purpose: To absorb moisture inside the GoPro housing. This is an absolute must. Too many times I have less than perfect pictures and video due to the case fogging up.
Size and Weight: Negligible
Key Attribute: Look for reusable versions as replacements may be hard to find on the road.
Best Value: We chose the CamKix anti-fog inserts due to the quantity, being reusable, and the fair price. You can also consider purchasing the GoPro starter kit above that includes this and more.
#3. GoPro Red Filter
Purpose: Did you know that you start losing the red color at just 10’ below the surface? The red filter adds this spectrum back into your pictures and video for a more natural and vibrant appearance. This is a must have unless you want to spend hours editing your pictures and videos for color.
Size and Weight: 1 x 0.2 x 1 inches and 0.6 ounces
Key Attributes: Make sure you look for a brand that has proper color correction, tight fit, and a loop for a leash in case it falls off.
Best Value: We own the PolarPro red filter and love it! In order to remove any air bubbles, remove the lens and put it back on under water.
#4. GoPro Telescoping Pole
Purpose: Most people will use the GoPro telescoping pole to get above the crowds, or take better selfies. However, my favorite aspect is getting closer to sea life since they feel less threatened.
Size and Weight: 15.8 x 2.2 x 2 inches and 9.8 ounces
Key Attributes: Keep an eye out for products that are waterproof, light yet strong material, compact, and extend to your desired length.
Best Value: Given our parameters, the ActionSports waterproof telescoping pole was ideal.
#5. GoPro Attachable Light
Purpose: Shed some light on all the wonderful places that GoPro allows you to capture. Although this is ideal for diving, it also is perfect for Cenotes on the Yucatan Peninsula, and other dark locations.
Size and Weight: 7.9 x 3.8 x 2.1 inches and 9.9 ounces
Key Attributes: The most important aspects to consider when deciding which brand to purchase are total lumens (brightness), battery life, and rated depth.
Best Value: We don’t own one yet, but the Sunix 40 meter attachable GoPro light is on our list to purchase before our next drive trip. The LEDs are bright and help create a long battery life.
#6. GoPro Floating Hand Grip
Purpose: Not only does the hand grip provide a more comfortable way to hold your GoPro, but it also floats should your hand slip. The only place I wouldn’t recommend this GoPro accessory for travel is when diving. I prefer the GoPro to sink as I can’t rush to the surface to recover it.
Size and Weight: 1.2 x 3.9 x 7.1 inches and 1.6 ounces
Key Attributes: Make sure you choose a color that stands out compared to the water.
Best Value: This is a basic GoPro accessory for travel, so price was the biggest contributing factor. We would choose the CamKix floating hand grip.
Best GoPro Travel Accessories: Photo & Video
#1. GoPro Remote
Purpose: A remote definitely makes using a GoPro easier, especially when you combine it with an extension pole or GorillaPod tripod.
Size and Weight: 7.09 x 4.17 x 1.97 inches and 5.4 ounces
Key Attributes: Compatibility is the most important consideration.
#2. GoPro Microphone Kit
Purpose: If GoPro has a downside, then it has to be the sound quality. The microphone kit is perfect for vloggers, and those that don’t always want to add background music to videos.
Size and Weight: 5.5 x 1.5 x 4 inches and 0.8 ounces
Key Attributes: One of the main reasons we wanted to purchase a microphone kit was to reduce the sound of wind and make us more audible.
Best Value: The Purple Panda microphone kit solves this problem for us perfectly & we recommend it as one of the best GoPro travel accessories.
#3. GoPro Time Lapse
Purpose: Are you trying to up your GoPro photography skills? Then this is a great way to get started with original time lapse videos. Simply wind up the device, wait 30-60 minutes, and you have yourself a time lapse.
Size and Weight: 3.5 x 3.5 x 3 inches and 4 ounces
Key Attributes: The GoPro time lapse is a basic device. Durability is a concern, but price was the major factor.
Best Value: We are just starting to play with our Movo Photo time lapse, but love it. So far our only complaint is that the video goes counterclockwise, but the other brands do as well. Simply play in reverse when editing to correct this.
#4. GoPro Underwater Dome
Purpose: Have you wondered how photographers get those beautiful half water and half air shots? This underwater dome creates a pocket of air so the camera can focus on both simultaneously.
Size and Weight: 9.8 x 8.3 x 4.7 inches and 1.9 pounds
Key Attributes: The two things to look for are a tight seal for the air dome, and a lens hood to reduce flare.
Best Value: We are looking forward to being able to use this, but the best reviews lead us to purchase the SHOOT underwater dome.
#5. GoPro Gimbal
Purpose: A GoPro Gimbal is perfect for keeping level shots and preventing a shaky image. This is definitely one of the best GoPro travel accessories if you’re looking to go to the next-level.
Size and Weight: 15 x 8 x 2.2 inches and 2.6 pounds
Key Attributes: The biggest concern is difficulty calibrating the device, and having the gimbal shift soon after.
Best Value: We haven’t make the plunge for this GoPro accessory yet, but it is on our radar. The best value we found on Amazon is the second version of the Feiyu splash proof gimbal.
#6. GoPro Drone
Purpose: A Go Pro drone is perfect if you ever wanted a bird’s eye perspective. So many times I wish we had this to take pictures and video of Mexican ruins, inside volcanoes, and countless other places.
Size and Weight: 35 x 13 x 17 inches and 9.6 ounces
Key Attributes: Whichever drone you purchase, make sure it has brushless metal motors, best flight time available for your budget, and a long communication range.
Best Value: Our only hesitation with purchasing a GoPro drone is the size and weight as we are minimalist backpackers. Since this is the only option under $200 I might play with the DROCON drone while in NYC. Remember to register it with the FAA if in the USA.
