Manager Tonya runs a tight ship over at Dos Tiburones Dive Shop – she has a fantastic crew in & out of the water, who quickly make us here at DIY Travel HQ feel like part of the family.

Dos Tiburones is the newest dive centre on Big Corn Island (established in 2014) so all their equipment is top quality & well-maintained.

Their dive boat is made of custom-fitted fibreglass.

Dos Tiburones are affiliated with both PADI & SSI, as well as being the only SSI-accredited dive centre in Nicaragua.

They are located on the north shore of Big Corn Island, in the neighbourhood of Sally Peachy.

It’s a long but scenic coastal walk from the ferry pier, though you can take a taxi to anywhere on the island for C$20.

Either way, find out why a visit to Dos Tiburones Dive Shop is definitely worth the trip on one of the most beautiful destinations in Nicaragua!

Dive Trips Available with Dos Tiburones Dive Shop

Dos Tiburones offers dive trips to all the sites around Big Corn Island, many of which are just a short distance away from the dive shop.

Diving on Big Corn Island involves an entire reef system with ship wrecks & rich sea life in turquoise Caribbean seas. The water is around 27 degrees year-round, with consistently good visibility.

Interesting coral formations around Big Corn Island

The #1 diving destination is Blowing Rock, a giant formation of volcanic rock & coral. It’s located 12kms from Big Corn so the conditions are optimal for marine life. Nurse sharks, spotted reef sharks, southern sting rays & eagle rays are commonly spotted, along with barracuda, turtles, eels, lobsters & crabs.

We dived at Long Reef, which is a shallow drift dive, perfect for beginners. The highlight was a friendly nurse shark along with some gregorian fans & soft coral. Sean was a great dive master – the ocean had a bit of swell so he made it easier for us by hugging the inside of the reef rather than swimming on the top.

Dos Tiburones also offers night dives, which includes the use of dive lights & tank markers.

If you’re short on time, the Little Corn Day Trip is a great option. It includes 2 dives in the morning, before disembarking on Little Corn, where you have to rest of the day to explore the island. It’s a very small place & an afternoon is enough to give you a good taste of what the island has to offer, before retuning back to Big Corn at around 4:00pm.

Diving trips with Dos Tiburones head out everyday at 8:00am & 10:00am in the morning and 1:00pm & 3:00pm in the afternoon, giving you the opportunity to dive 4 times a day.

Most dive sites are situated close-by, so service intervals are usually spent back at the dive shop – this is convenient as you can test the waters with a 1 tank dive & go from there.

Gearing up to dive on Big Corn Island

Some of the sites are dependent on weather conditions, especially Blowing Rock. But if you have specific sites in mind, let the staff at Dos Tiburones Dive Shop know & they’ll do their best to get you there.

The dive masters & instructors are all PADI and/or SSI certified. We dived with Sean who was professional, patient & an excellent photographer! He took photos for us with his GoPro, which was an unexpected surprise – after our dive, we left our email address with him & within a few days, we received a link with all the photos to download!

  1. Awesome! I have become a big fan of scuba diving after I did my first dive in the coral reefs of Lakshadweep. The corn island looks like an interesting destination for divers with so many diving sites spread all around it.

I didn’t realize India has such nice islands & water (based on Google pictures). Sheena wasn’t wowed by India, but I would like to spend some time there to form my own opinion. I just need to convince her to go back. 🙂

There are a lot of sites around Big Corn Island, but the best from everyone we talked to is Blowing Rock. It sounds like it is worth the add-on cost to get there!

Dos Tiburones is a textbook example of how a dive shop should be run! We actually learned that they offer a non-expiring free day of diving to people who return to Big Corn Island too! We might just have to take advantage of that one winter.

  2. Sounds like a great dive experience. I was not yet dive certified when I went to Nicaragua but have been thinking of going back to explore more of the country. I am now adding Corn Island to the list of destinations especially since I have my dive certificate now.

The Corn Islands are great for that remote island feeling. Little Corn has a more relaxed vibe with no vehicles & better food, but Big Corn has better beaches & is closer to the dive sites. Both are worth exploring. We didn’t get to visit Blowing Rock, but that is apparently the pick-of-the-bunch dive site.

  3. I’m not a fan of diving (or maybe because I haven’t tried it yet) but this looks like a great place to dive. I love the ocean views!

That’s crazy since you are from the Philippines! I’m guessing you have at least tried snorkeling. Dos Tiburones has a trip that takes you to two sunken ships & a reef. You can also rent equipment there & just walk right in. It is shallow & home to rays just meters from the dive shop!

  4. The underwater selfie looks so cute. I am not much into diving, but still the way you have explained the details has trigged in an interest in me. Hope I am able to get my self trained in the future 🙂

The beauty of diving is that you can always learn anywhere that diving is offered. Dos Tiburones offers the Open Water course for $330, which is on par around the world. They use a pool on Big Corn for the intro dives, & a lot of sites are nearby for easy access once you master the basics. My advice is to get your certification when you plan on doing multiple dives in a short amount of time. It helps you really feel comfortable & internalize all the learning.

I learned in Thailand & then didn’t do it again for over a year so I had to take a refresher. Now I’m comfortable with a lot, but not all, of the things that may go wrong. It took doing 15+ dives in the Philippines to get there.

  5. I’ve yet to try scuba diving but would love to do it with Dos Tiburones crew. I like the fact that they can make you feel like a family because that comfortable feeling assures you fully enjoy any trip.

When learning to dive or taking any subsequent course I always say the most important factor is your instructor. If you don’t feel comfortable with them you aren’t going to enjoy it & be open to asking questions to further your knowledge. You would be in good hands at Dos Tiuburones & their equipment is top notch too!

  6. To see the underwater world is high on my bucket list. Just not sure if diving or snorkeling I can go for, because I am a very bad swimmer and very short on breathe. You tempted me again. What other options are available to experience the underwater world here?

    1. Author

Well, they currently don’t have submarines or glass bottom boats so you will have to stick with snorkeling or diving. Neither of us are very good at swimming either. Luckily, you can breath regularly when diving & the air in the mask keeps you floating when snorkeling. You could also always wear a life jacket to keep you afloat. Without a snorkel I probably couldn’t last 5 minutes, but with one I can go for more than an hour with no problem.

  7. I dont dive but it is on my list! This looks like one of those place where I go and intend on staying maybe a week and then I accidently stay for months hahah woops! When I head to Nicaragua I will have to go to Corn Islands and stay here!

    1. Author

That’s what happens for a lot of people that visit the Corn Islands! If you take the ferry then you have at least a week before you return. Otherwise, your flight might lock you in. 🙁

  8. The closest thing I’ve done to diving is helmet diving in Boracay and I sort of enjoyed it. Sort of because the pressure made me very dizzy. I’m also kind afraid to go diving because of sharks (yes, I’ve watched too much jaws when I was a kid).

I like the vibe of Dos Tiburones based on your photos though. It’s lovely that staying there is convenient because they have many things to offer, diving being one of them.

    1. Author

Helmet diving looks sooooooo cool. That’s how I picture the old school suits, but now without the body portion. Did you feel like an astronaut? Sharks are generally harmless unless humans have started feeding them for personal gain. Then they associate humans & boats with food.
